Description

This section of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is between Charlton Lake and Sisters Mirror Lake. Segments on the Bend District are mainly in the Three Sisters Wilderness Area and wander through remote areas of old growth forest, past numerous lakes, and across treeless pumice plains. Early season mosquitoes can be fierce in the southern part of our district.

Map + Directions

Basic Directions

The only paved-road access to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) on the Bend Ranger District is at Charlton Lake Trailhead. This trailhead is reached by a long drive south on State Hwy 97, then west on Hwy. 58 toward Willamette pass, then north on Forest Rd. 5897, and finally ½ mile east on Rd. 4290. Alternate access for high-clearance vehicles is via Forest Roads 42 and 4290, approx. 35 miles SW of Sunriver. Road 4290 is very rough for 8 miles and not recommended for passenger vehicles. Irish & Taylor Lakes Trailhead, on Forest Rd. 4636 seven miles beyond Little Cultus Lake, usually requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to reach. However, several trailheads along Century Drive, 30-40 miles west of Bend, provide closer access to the PCT via feeder trails of various lengths, including (in north to south order): Devils Lake, Sisters Mirror, Elk Lake, (closest trailhead to the PCT at 1 mile), Six Lakes, Lucky Lake, and Winopee Trailheads.
