For a well-rounded dose of culture north of Los Angeles and south of San Francisco, Fresno is the front-runner, a city home to a long list of galleries, numerous wineries, a busy events calendar and a good clutch of museums. Additionally, it also boasts an interesting assortment of historic buildings like the downtown water tower, a late 19th-century piece patterned after a medieval German watchtower, as well as some examples of Art Deco Architecture. Farmers Markets flourish in these parts thanks to the proliferation of ranches, farms and vineyards, but for more things natural consider also a trip to the zoo, star-gazing at the local planetarium or even a short road trip east to nearby national parks.
