Description
In Newberry National Volcanic Monument. From the parking lot, this one-mile interpretive trail climbs up and onto this impressive lava flow of obsidian (black glass) and pumice. There are seven interpretive signs along the trail. (About 1/3 of the way up the trail, take the left fork of loop trail.) The Big Obsidian Flow is 1300 years old, the youngest lava flow in Oregon.
Bears are a common occurrence in Newberry Caldera. Please be Bear Safe and be aware of and follow all food storage regulations.
